May Newsletter – Good Grief

Hello Everyone

It may sound a bit strange to write in such a sombre fashion on a day like today. The sounds of bird song, the fresh smell of grass cut, gentle breeze and warmth all around, made my heart sing. But it was the very fact of good weather and the beauty of nature all around me that started me thinking along these lines.

I remember seeing a Peanuts cartoon where the bossy girl only wanted ‘ups’ and no ‘downs’.  Then it was a case of ‘upper ups’ and even ‘more-upper ups’.  But of course, that is impossible.  It would be wonderful if that was possible, but “in the midst of life we are in death”, so although Nature is beautiful, it is also heart-breaking.  For example, some dozen ducklings hatched recently, then there were only two left, then none.  Also, I ignited a gas fire one evening, and in a split second had cremated a small bat that had been sleeping inside the grill.  Needless to say, I felt rather bad about that.

Grief is a part of Life, and from time to time we get enquiries from prospective clients who are finding it difficult to come to terms with grief.  There can be emotions that are being denied, buried along with unfinished business.  Loss need not be as intense as grief, but it embraces it, as well as being a wider experience.  Loss of mobility, loss of faculties, loss of status, are all situations where a form of grief comes into play.  It is a fact of life that the older a person is, the more that person has to cope with grief.  However, it also brings into sharp relief just how good some things truly are – the ‘ups’.

As a Hindu might say – embrace Life with all its fullness; and grow.
