Hello everyone.
Over the last few weeks, I have had several conversations with clients and friends about happiness. There is a consensus of opinion that, like every emotion, it is something that cannot be sustained indefinitely. It is transient at best. Hopelessly fleeting in most cases.
The pursuit of happiness is a different matter. It is something that virtually everyone does and does so most of the time. There is the unwritten acknowledgement that the person will be happy once they have their new car; dress; house; girlfriend; boyfriend; holiday; etc. etc.. It is always something in the future, something to work towards or long for. And, of course, once that something has been attained the gloss quickly wears off and some other dream takes its place.
My contention is that happiness is essentially a fantasy, so why spend so much energy on its pursuit? And how can you be happy when there is so much bitterness, sadness and darkness all around us? That constitutes a form of denial, a denial of reality in which we live.
Surely a deeper form of ‘happiness’ is inner peace or contentment. Such an emotion can be far more enduring for there can be the acknowledgement of limitation of influence, of acceptance of what ‘is’, and no need to strive for anything else or better, an ‘up’ to the ‘upper-up’, ad nauseum.
If we are looking for happiness over the Christmas season then there is bound to be a measure of disappointment and dissatisfaction. That is Life. If there is an acceptance of that deeper peace and contentment, then that is a true gift to treasure.
Happy Christmas everyone.
